Haiti Help...some for, some against...

In recent days many of my conversations include the destruction in Haiti. There are many strong feelings towards whether or not the U.S. should be sending help and money to help them rebuild and recover from the recent earthquake. I will admit I was swayed from my original thinking of "yes we should do whatever we can!" I think its unbearable that other countries are suffering the way they are and I feel we need to step in and help them. But then I heard from others who said that we shouldn't help other countries when people are still homeless after hurricane Katrina. Then that really made sense to me. We should make sure our fellow Americans have daily needs before having so many fundraisers for another country. I've also heard the following statement "where were the other countries when hurricane Katrina hit?" then, that made so much sense to me! they're right! Why should we give to all these countries when they dont help us out. Upon stalking one of my friends who were complaining about this very thing, a friend had posted this link on their profile http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_response_to_Hurricane_Katrina?wasRedirected=true I checked it out and i'm flabbergasted at how much was offered to the U.S. that was turned down. Ugh! just the thought of knowing that there are so many people still trying to recover when we were offered so much to make it happen!!!

Hey. I totally get it. I think it is good that people want to help and everyone is entitled to helping in their own way. But I always have a hard time just jumping in and giving money as soon as a disaster strikes. I pray. And this time around I saw the stories about orphans that have families waiting for them so I gave to a ministry that is helping get those children to their adoptive families. I do believe that it is good and right to help children that don't have families to help them. But as for the rest... I will continue to pray and if a need arises where my heart aches to the point that I must do something... it is then that I will do something. :)

But yeah... we do need to take care of our own as well. It won't be long until people forget about Haiti... just like they forgot about Katrina.
